Our son has been diagnosed with Autism. Where do we go from here?

Educate yourself on the subject. Remember that your child is unique. Because autism covers a wide spectrum, you will find that there is information that does not relate to your child. Make decisions that are appropriate for your child. Trust your instincts.

Research our "About Autism" section and browse through our "Resources" for helpful links

How should I educate my child?

Learn about IEP (Individualized Education Program). This is a school system to develop the appropriate curriculum for your child. Your child should receive individualized professional augmented programs—speech for example. As early as possible, go to Parent Training.

Will my child ever speak?

Many children with autism develop good functioning language. Most other children can develop communication skills such as the use of pictures, computers, or electronic devices.

Will my child ever show us affection?

A child with autism may have some sensory issues but with some knowledge of your child you will realize that children with autism can be affectionate on their terms. It is important that you keep this connection with your child.

Is there a future for my child?

There are many productive and contented individuals that are autistic. It is important that you learn and understand how to communicate with this individual.

Twenty years ago there was little direction for parents. Now with informed parents and educators we are seeing amazing progress wherever early and intense integration has occurred. There is much hope. See our web links for additional information.
