Karen Kaplan has over 30 years of experience in the field of Autism Spectrum Disorders and developmental learning challenges. She possesses a credential in speech and hearing as well as an administrative credential. Her roles as Head of School and Executive Director of schools for students with special needs have given her a wide base of knowledge and experience. Karen works as a private consultant with family resource centers, parents, public and private schools, colleges and universities that support the needs of Autism Spectrum Disorders and similar learning differences. She is the founder of the Autism Lecture Series and The ASD Resource & Exposition at Dominican University in San Rafael, California. She participates on the San Francisco/Marin Autism Taskforce and is the chair of the Autism Housing Committee. She is on the Marin Autism Collaborative Steering Committee and chairs the Educational Sub-committee.
Laxmi has been working with special needs children for the past six years. She holds a B.A. in Business Administration and an A.S. degree in Early Childhood Education. Her interests fall in the areas of behavior management and implementation of different communication strategies.
Angie Kuo grew up in Taiwan and came to the U.S. in 2001 to pursue higher education. Prior to coming to the U.S., she worked with children with Special Learning Disabilities, Autism, and Cerebral Palsy for 2 years. She earned her first Master in General Education with an endorsement in Bilingual Education from Western Oregon University. While working at Wings, she also earned her second Master and CA credential in Special Education through Notre Dame de Namur University. This year is her 10th year of working at Wings. She has experience teaching both elementary and secondary classrooms, Last year, she was promoted to be the Secondary Education Coordinator. As an administrator for the secondary program, her interest and focus will always be supporting the students and families with transition planning, increasing community experience, and exploring meaningful and purposeful possibilities for our young adults.
Bethany is fluent in American Sign Language, and has previously worked with deaf special needs children as well as in the classroom of Wings Learning Center. She enjoys watching the students' of Wings thrive and make progress while supporting the operations of the school.
After working most of her life in Retail Operations and Store Management, Debra came to Wings in October of 2013. She brings with her a strong background in Building Management and Safety Awareness. She is currently training to become a Certified CERT Member (Community Emergency Response Team), an organization started by FEMA and run locally by Emergency Responders with the help of Volunteer Members. She is also planning to expand her knowledge in the areas of Facilities Management and IT Management. Debra works to ensure that the students and staff are safe and that school operations run effectively so staff can concentrate on teaching our students.
Pilar España joined the Wings team on September 2014. She is a Native of Bolivia and has lived in the Bay Area for the past 17 years working for the Corporate, Non-profit and Education sectors. In her current role she assists the Executive Director with events and fundraising for the school. She’s enjoying the challenges that this new role brings.
Erin graduated with honors from UC Santa Cruz in 2013 with a BA in Psychology. She started her career at Wings in July of 2013 and has worked in all the classrooms with most of her time spent in the elementary classrooms. She has been the Senior Instructional Assistant in both our elementary and secondary classrooms. She loves working with the amazing students and families here at Wings. In her free time, she loves spending time with her husband watching movies, cooking, and exploring the Bay Area.
