Karen Kaplan has over 35 years of experience in the field of Autism Spectrum Disorders and developmental learning challenges. She possesses a credential in speech and hearing, special education, as well as an administrative credential. Her roles as Head of School and Executive Director of schools for students with special needs have given her a wide base of knowledge and experience. Karen works as a private consultant with family resource centers, parents, public and private schools, colleges and universities that support the needs of Autism Spectrum Disorders and similar learning differences. She was the founder of the Autism Lecture Series and The Autism Resource & Exposition in Northern California and currently facilitates a yearly one-day seminar on autism. She participated on the San Francisco/Marin Autism Taskforce. She was on the Marin Autism Collaborative Steering Committee and chaired the Educational Sub-committee. She travels globally through Offerings non-profit to expand knowledge and supports in understanding autism.
Laxmi has been working with special needs children for the past six years. She holds a B.A. in Business Administration and an A.S. degree in Early Childhood Education. Her interests fall in the areas of behavior management and implementation of different communication strategies.
Bethany is fluent in American Sign Language, and has previously worked with deaf special needs children as well as in the classroom of Wings Learning Center. She enjoys watching the students' of Wings thrive and make progress while supporting the operations of the school.
Jose Garrido has been living in the bay area for about 15 years, joining the Wings team in February 2016. He started as a Senior Instructional assistant. Jose’s experience ranges in working with students in elementary classrooms all the way to high school. He is excited for the challenges of this new role.
Tin’s greatest passion is to bring people together to expand their minds. Being a social person, she has become known as Wings Learning Center's event planner, helping to organize functions such as the Mother’s Day Tea, Wings Olympics, and school assemblies. After four years as a lead teacher at Wings, she has recently stepped up to the role of Development, in which she is creating new ideas for marketing, building connectons with the community, creating volunteer opprotunities and help fundraise for the school. Her background includes nine years of teaching in special education, and an M.S. in Special Education. She also has a degree in Broadcasting, Film, Communications and more than fifteen years of event planning experience in the bay area.
Kate was born and raised in Florida. She received her Bachelors of Science degree in Biopsychology at UC Santa Barbara. While at UCSB she volunteered with at risk children through C.A.L.M. and realized her passion for working with kids. After college Kate moved to Dallas and was working in an administrative role. In Dallas she also received her credentials as a yoga instructor. Kate is so excited to be taking on the role of Education Coordinator Assistant and is very eager to bring her experience to Wings to begin a yoga program.
Emily was born and raised in the Bay Area and grew up in Millbrae, CA. Emily received her Bachelors of Science in Special Education and Rehabilitation with an emphasis in Deaf studies and a minor in jazz dance from the University of Arizona in 2011. Following graduation, Emily has worked at Oak Hill School in San Anselmo, CA as a Senior Instructional Assistant for the past 7 years. Emily’s experience ranges in working with students in elementary classrooms all the way to high school classrooms. Emily is extremely excited to be taking on her new role as Family Liaison at Wings. She is eager to apply her experience and skills towards working with families, their children, and building meaningful relationships.
